Overnight closure on Routes 24 and 244 at Combe Down Tunnel
Routes 24 and 244 through Combe Down Tunnel, including the path at the southern end, will be closed overnight from 22:00 on Thursday 25 June until 06:00 on Friday 26 June 2026 while drainage works are carried out.
The closure is expected to last approximately eight hours. There is no traffic-free diversion available and alternative routes are on-road only.
This route connects with National Route 4 and National Route 24 and is part of the Bath Two Tunnels Circuit.
Starting from East Twerton, it follows the disused railway trackbed of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway through the Bath suburb of Oldfield Park to the Devonshire Tunnel. It emerges into Lyncombe Vale before entering the Combe Down Tunnel and then coming out to cross Tucking Mill Viaduct at Tucking Mill into Midford.
The route takes in two disused railway tunnels, the Devonshire Tunnel and the Combe Down tunnel.
At 1672 metres Combe Down is the longest traffic-free cycling tunnel in Europe. Travelling through it you'll experience an extraordinary audio-visual installation, Passage by United Visual Artists.
Both tunnels are well lit, have a sealed surface and are wide enough for pedestrians and cyclists to comfortably use the route in harmony.
